Story
About to embark on a world tour, global pop sensation Skye Riley begins experiencing increasingly terrifying and unexplained events. Torn by mounting terror and the pressures of fame, Skye is forced to confront her past. In one scene Skye puts a bottle of VOSS water on the stone/marble kitchen counter and makes a sound that matches the sound of something plastic being placed.

Using the pop music scene and celebrity culture as a backdrop, The Laughter Phenomenon is a very disturbing portrayal. Skye, the central character, is at the center of this harrowing story that presents layers upon layers of the life of someone out of control. We see most of the story from Skye’s perspective, so the film does a great job of building empathy for the character, despite her moral failings.
It also presents deeper themes about the toxic culture of pop stardom
In the film, The Smile takes on many meanings, as it also reflects the pressure to pose and smile for the cameras when mental health is difficult. Her manager, her assistant and the fans seem confused, but their actions seem like a torture device. It’s so sad, I personally feel that Skye is going too far and I’m relieved that the movie is finally over.
