Story
Following a family tragedy, three generations of the Deetz family return to their home in Winter River. Still haunted by Beetlejuice, Lydia’s life is turned upside down when her teenage daughter, Astrid, accidentally opens the portal to the afterlife. Jenna Ortega, Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, Catherine O’Hara, Justin Theroux and Monica Bellucci share why filming Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice was an experience they’ll never forget. Tim Burton has said that this film would only be made if Michael Keaton returned to reprise his role. Keaton said in March 2014 that this is the only sequel he’s interested in making. Lydia informs Astrid that Rory wants to get married at midnight on Halloween night. That would make it November 1st, since midnight is the start of a new day, and therefore it wouldn’t be Halloween anymore.

Could the characters hold up?
Also along for the ride are the always-excellent Ortega, Dafoe, Theroux, and Bellucci, although she’s utterly wasted here. Devito gives us a memorable cameo and
Burn Gorman gives us a couple of scenes. Verdict Beetlejuice 2 is one of those sequels that people have been talking about for decades, including countless rumors, fake news, and even fan-made trailers, but I didn’t expect it to actually happen. When the trailer came out, it was official, undeniable, and I was excited and hesitant. You see, I’m from that generation that saw the original movie when it first came out and loved it, but 36 years later it’s getting a sequel! Could it live up to expectations? Well, the answer is very mixed.
Ryder delivered and was fantastic, this was a great return
For over three and a half decades, it was only logical that this would make a big contribution to nostalgia, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice surprised me by how little it did. Yes, there are nods here and there, yes, there are flashbacks and yes, there is a certain song that makes a comeback, but overall, they really make a movie for a new generation who probably haven’t seen the original other than Beetlejuice fans and I personally didn’t appreciate this and found it to be a baffling choice. Next up, the casting, Keaton as Beetlejuice didn’t feel the same, I’m not sure if it was him or the script but he wasn’t the captivating character we love and know from the 80s. Lydia? O’Hara was again very similar to Delia, but we remember Delia being a deeply annoying character right? So this screen time compared to the original movie was certainly not a good thing. Theroux was excellent, Ortega was brilliant, Dafoe was his usual zany self and Bellucci was…
well, she was there
You see, I love Bellucci, but ultimately she was the antagonist of the film, she’s barely on screen, she contributes nothing and even the characters’ swansong is rushed and, frankly, terrible. You see, the plot is very tired and extremely generic, I needed that nostalgia, I needed Beetlejuice, it doesn’t have much of either. And when we do get the Beetlejuice scenes, they’re very, very mediocre.
